Facts:

The World

  • Approximately 130,000,000 children in the world have lost one parent, including 10,600,000 who have no parent at all
  • 87.6 million orphans live in Asia
  • 43.4 million orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa
  • 12.4 million live in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Almost 1.5 million children live in public care in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Children living in orphanages suffer significant physical and mental developmental delays
  • Every 15 seconds, another child becomes an AIDS orphan in Africa
  • Every YEAR 2,102,400 more children become orphans in Africa alone
  • Within two years of “aging out of” a Russian orphanage-~15% of all orphans have committed suicide, while another ~60% are involved in criminal activity, such as gangs, drugs, and/or prostitution.
  • Orphans are 13% less likely to attend school than non-orphans.

The United States

  • More than 500,000 children are in the U.S. foster care system with approximately 129,000 children currently waiting to be adopted.
  • On average, children waiting for adoption have been in foster care for more than 3.5 years.
